Fall Tent Camping Adventures. Best Locations Near Omaha

It's late September and we're starting to experience that PERFECT crisp, cool, fall air! This can mean only one thing - you can actually stand camping outdoors in the midwest again!!

While many might think that summer is the best time to go camping, in Omaha and the surrounding areas, the fall season will win my vote every time. Especially if you are tent camping! Read on to see our favorite spots within a few hours of Omaha, and hopefully you'll have a chance to test one out in the next month or two!

Ponca State Park, NEBRASKA

Less than a two hour drive from Omaha, and the perfect place to go to view the gorgeous fall colors! Approachable, beautiful hikes, and some nice, secluding tent camping spots.

We've visited multiple years during October, and it is often still warm enough to fish in the ponds, and there are usually some fun, wacky Halloween festivities going on as well!

Palisades State Park, SOUTH DAKOTA

This picture was taken last year on October 1st, and you can most definitely see the gorgeous fall foliage!

The perfect location to cozy up to the fire at night, and hike in comfortable weather throughout the day. Most of the mosquitos and other bothersome insects are gone by this time of year, which is a big bonus as well!

It will take three hours to drive here from Omaha, but you will be so glad you did! The gorgeous pink quartzite stone will sweep you off your feet! It is South Dakota's second smallest state park, so it is usually pretty calm and peaceful.

Hitchcock Nature Center, IOWA

Less than a half hour from Omaha, this is the perfect place for a quick camping adventure! If you have it in you, the back country campsites have the most amazing views! However, some of them are over a mile and a half of a hike-in, so be prepared if you're wanting to go that route!

With a good variety of trail offerings, they have a little something for everyone! If the forecast is looking good, I highly recommend a quick trip over any weekend to get some fresh air and serenity for the soul.
