One of the perks of our current neighborhood is that there are gorgeous, full trees in every yard! The down side? No sun available to grow a veggie garden.
Omaha had some gnarly summer storms last year, one of which caused us to have to take down a very old sugar maple in our backyard. While this is always sad for both the heart and wallet, the silver lining was that we could finally have an area in our backyard that receives full sun!
In summers past, we attempted growing peppers and tomatoes in pots, but it was never very successful. Being a produce-loving family, we are THRILLED that we get to plant a proper garden this year!
My husband used to work in landscaping during the summers of his college years, which always comes in handy! We used the Oldcastle Blocks and 2x6 boards to create garden beds for this summer. Joe built them last fall, and they held up well during the winter. It's important to not skip the step of tamping down crushed gravel below the stones, pavers, etc. They were fairly easy to assemble (think large version of slightly complicated Legos) and the best part is how customizable they are. You can create so many different designs to suit your yard!
I'll have updates for you once it is warm enough to actually plant everything. We need to add top soil, cute twinkly solar lights, pollinators, the works :) And the kids and I are most excited to try and grow green beans up and down the arch. Wish us luck!
